Sitagliptin and Metformin Extended-Release

Healthcare providers may prescribe sitagliptin and metformin extended-release for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. This combination drug works by lowering the amount of sugar produced by the liver and by increasing the amount of insulin produced in response to meals. It comes in tablet form and is taken once daily. Some people may experience side effects, such as diarrhea, headaches, and symptoms of the common cold.

What Is Sitagliptin and Metformin Extended-Release?

Sitagliptin and metformin extended-release (Janumet® XR) is a prescription medication used in combination with an appropriate diet and regular exercise to treat adults with type 2 diabetes. It contains two diabetes medicines, as the name implies: sitagliptin (Januvia®) and metformin extended-release (Glucophage XR®, Glutametz®, or Fortamet®).
Janumet (sitagliptin and metformin) is similar to sitagliptin and metformin extended-release, but contains immediate-release metformin instead of the extended-release formulation. Because it does not contain an extended-release version of metformin, regular Janumet must be taken twice a day.
