Tirosint Uses

Can Children Use It?

Tirosint is approved to treat thyroid problems in children and infants. However, it is recommended only for those who can swallow the capsules (unlike the tablet formulations of levothyroxine, which can be crushed or dissolved in water). Talk with your healthcare provider about the benefits and risks of using Tirosint in children.

Off-Label Uses for Tirosint

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend Tirosint for something other than the conditions discussed in this article. Sometimes, Tirosint is used off-label in combination with antidepressants to treat depression, particularly depression that has been resistant to other treatments.

It is important to note that Tirosint should not be used as a weight loss medication in people without thyroid problems. Normal doses of this medication are not likely to cause significant weight loss; weight loss is only seen at doses high enough to cause serious Tirosint side effects. Also, this medicine should not be used to treat infertility, unless the infertility is related to a thyroid problem.
