Repaglinide Dosing

When starting the drug, repaglinide dosing guidelines call for 0.5 mg to 2 mg, taken before meals. The actual dose will depend on the result of your hemoglobin A1c test, how well your diabetes is controlled, whether other medical conditions are present, and if you are taking any other medications. The drug can be taken half an hour before meals, and the maximum repaglinide dosing amount is 16 mg per day.

An Introduction to Repaglinide Dosing

The dosage of repaglinide (Prandin®) that your healthcare provider prescribes will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:

  • How well your diabetes is controlled
  • Other medical conditions you may have
  • Other medications you are currently taking.

As is always the case, do not adjust your repaglinide dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.

Repaglinide Dosing for Type 2 Diabetes

When starting the drug, the dose of repaglinide that your healthcare provider prescribes will also depend on your hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) result. If your HbA1c is less than 8 percent, the starting dose is repaglinide 0.5 mg, taken before each meal. If your HbA1c is higher, the starting dose is repaglinide 1 mg or repaglinide 2 mg, taken before each meal. HbA1c is a test often used to measure long-term blood sugar control in people with diabetes.

The maximum dose of repaglinide is 16 mg total per day.

General Repaglinide Dosing Information

Considerations for people taking repaglinide include the following:

  • Repaglinide should be taken by mouth before every meal.

  • You can take the medication up to a half an hour before meals. If you skip a meal, skip that repaglinide dose as well. If you eat an extra meal, take an extra dose before that meal.

  • If you take your repaglinide and then do not eat a meal within a half an hour, eat something as soon as possible. Not eating after taking the drug can cause low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).

  • If you forget to take repaglinide before eating, wait to take it until you eat again. Do not take a double dose.

  • For repaglinide to work properly, you have to take it as prescribed. The medication will not work if you take it differently than how your healthcare provider recommends.

  • If you are unsure about anything related to repaglinide or repaglinide dosing, talk to your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. Do not stop taking the drug without first discussing it with your healthcare provider.
