Precautions and Warnings With Linagliptin

Before starting treatment with linagliptin, tell your healthcare provider if you have type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or any allergies. In addition, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should also consult your healthcare provider before taking linagliptin. Warnings and precautions also extend to people who are taking certain medications, vitamins, or herbal supplements.

What Should I Tell My Healthcare Provider Before Taking Linagliptin?

You should talk with your healthcare provider prior to taking linagliptin (Tradjenta™) if you have:
 
 
Also, let your healthcare provider know if you are:
 
  • Pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant
  • Breastfeeding.
 
In addition, tell your healthcare provider about all other medications you are taking, including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
 

Specific Linagliptin Precautions and Warnings

Some warnings and precautions to be aware of prior to taking this diabetes medicine include the following:
 
  • Linagliptin should not be used to treat type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis, as it is not effective for treating these conditions.
 
 
  • Combining linagliptin with sulfonylureas increases the risk of low blood sugar levels. Your healthcare provider may need to lower the dosage of your sulfonylurea. Sulfonylureas include:
 
 
 
  • Linagliptin is a pregnancy Category B medication. This means that it may not be safe for use during pregnancy, although the full risks are currently unknown. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking linagliptin during pregnancy (see Tradjenta and Pregnancy).
 
  • It is unknown if linagliptin passes through breast milk. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding or plan to start, discuss this with your healthcare provider prior to taking this drug (see Tradjenta and Breastfeeding).
