What Is Linagliptin/Metformin Used For?

Available in the form of a tablet, linagliptin/metformin is used for treating type 2 diabetes in adults. It contains two different medications that work to control blood sugar levels in several ways, such as by increasing insulin production and decreasing the amount of glucose that the liver produces. A healthcare provider may also recommend using this medicine "off-label" in combination with insulin.

An Overview of Uses for Linagliptin/Metformin

Linagliptin/metformin (Jentadueto™) is a prescription medication used to treat type 2 diabetes. It should be used in combination with appropriate changes in diet and exercise to help control blood sugar levels. This medication is not appropriate for treating type 1 diabetes.

Linagliptin/Metformin Use for Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is the most common type (see Diabetes Types). It is also sometimes called adult-onset diabetes or noninsulin-dependent diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is a condition in which the cells of the body do not respond to insulin as well as they normally should. As a result, these cells do not sufficiently remove sugar from the blood. This is why people with type 2 diabetes have high blood sugar levels.
Over time, high blood sugar can lead to a number of problems, including diabetic impotence, diabetic neuropathy, kidney failure, and heart disease (see Diabetes Complications). The cause of type 2 diabetes is not fully understood, although it is known that obesity and genetics play an important role.
