Insulin Lispro Protamine/Insulin Lispro

Insulin lispro protamine/insulin lispro is a prescription medication used for controlling blood sugar in people with diabetes. It contains a rapid-acting insulin and an intermediate-acting insulin, starts working quickly, and continues to work for several hours. Insulin lispro protamine/insulin lispro comes in injectable form and is injected just under the skin before meals twice a day, within 15 minutes before you start eating.

What Is Insulin Lispro Protamine/Insulin Lispro?

Insulin lispro protamine/insulin lispro (Humalog® Mix50/50, Humalog® Mix75/25) is a prescription insulin medication used for the treatment of diabetes. It contains a mixture of two different types of insulin and is taken just before meals (often just twice a day). Ideally, using this type of insulin decreases the number of injections per day (since it combines two types of insulin in one injection).

Potential Side Effects

As with any medicine, side effects are possible with insulin lispro protamine/insulin lispro. As with all insulins, insulin lispro protamine/insulin lispro side effects can be quite dangerous, especially if the dose is too high.
 
Possible side effects of insulin lispro protamine/insulin lispro (as well as all other forms of insulin) include, but are not limited to:
 
  • Low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia)
  • A skin reaction at the injection site
  • Thickening or pitting of the skin at the injection site
  • Allergic reactions.
