Also referred to as overactive thyroid, hyperthyroidism is a condition that occurs when excess thyroid hormone is made by the thyroid gland. Common symptoms include irritability, fatigue, sweating, and weight loss. The most common cause of this condition is Graves' disease, which affects about 2 percent of all women at some point in their lives. The goal of treatment for hyperthyroidism is to return thyroid hormone levels to a normal level. Treatment options include:

  • Radioiodine therapy (radioiodine ablation)
  • Surgery.
The two main medicines used for this condition are beta blockers and antithyroid medicines.
