Food to Avoid With Hyperthyroidism

No foods have been shown to improve the symptoms of hyperthyroidism in clinical studies. On the other hand, there are also no foods that have been shown to make symptoms worse in most cases. Although people with hyperthyroidism don't need to avoid any specific foods, they should still strive to eat a well-balanced diet, which means limiting the amounts of saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, and sugar they consume.

Other suggestions for eating a well-balanced diet and controlling your weight during and after treatment for hyperthyroidism include the following:

  • Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and grains
  • Get regular physical activity for at least 30 minutes a day on most days of the week
  • Limit your intake of alcohol.
