Can I Use Humalog Mix75/25 When Pregnant?

Humalog^® Mix75/25 (insulin lispro protamine/insulin lispro) is a prescription diabetes medication that contains two different types of insulin. As with many types of insulin, Humalog Mix75/25 is generally considered safe for pregnant women.

Humalog Mix75/25 and Pregnancy Category B

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) uses a category system to classify the possible risks to a fetus when a specific medicine is taken during pregnancy. Pregnancy Category B is given to medicines that have not been adequately studied in pregnant humans but do not appear to cause harm to the fetus in animal studies.

Insulin lispro (one of the insulins in Humalog Mix75/25) has been studied in pregnant rats and rabbits and did not appear to cause any harm to the fetuses. The other insulin in Humalog Mix75/25 (insulin lispro protamine) is not expected to cause any problems either, as it is just a longer-acting version of insulin lispro.

Based on these animal studies, Humalog Mix75/25 is not predicted to cause problems for pregnant women when used appropriately. However, it is important to note that animals do not always respond to medicines in the same way that humans do. Therefore, a pregnancy Category B medicine should be given to a pregnant woman only if her healthcare provider believes that the benefits to the woman outweigh any possible risks to the unborn child.
