Glyburide and Metformin Dosing

The usual starting glyburide and metformin dose for people who are not taking either metformin or glyburide is 1.25 mg/250 mg once daily with a meal. However, the glyburide and metformin dosing guidelines your healthcare provider follows will vary depending on a number of factors, such as how well your diabetes is controlled, other medical conditions you may have, and other drugs you may be taking. Your healthcare provider may slowly increase your dosage if necessary.

 

Glyburide and Metformin Dosing: An Introduction

Glyburide and metformin (Glucovance®) is a combination of two different diabetes drugs: glyburide (DiaBeta®, Glynase®, or Micronase®) and metformin hydrochloride (Fortamet®, Glucophage®, Glucophage XR®, Glumetza®, or Riomet®). The dose of glyburide and metformin your healthcare provider prescribes will vary depending on a number of factors, including:
 
  • How well your diabetes is controlled
  • Other medical conditions you may have
  • Other medications you may be currently taking.
     
As always, do not adjust your dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.
 

Glyburide and Metformin Dosage for People New to Metformin and Glyburide

If you are not taking either metformin or glyburide, the recommended starting dose is glyburide and metformin 1.25 mg/250 mg once daily with meals. If your diabetes is poorly controlled (if you have an HbA1c level greater than 9 percent or a fasting blood sugar level greater than 200 mg/dL), the recommended starting dose is glyburide and metformin 1.25 mg/250 mg twice daily with meals. Your healthcare provider can slowly increase your dose if necessary, up to a total of glyburide and metformin 20 mg/2000 mg per day.
