Drug Interactions With Glyburide and Metformin

Interactions With Glyburide and Metformin Explained

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when glyburide and metformin is combined with any of the drugs listed above.

Beta Blockers
Taking glyburide and metformin with beta blockers can increase your risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). If you are taking glyburide and metformin with a beta blocker, you may need to be monitored more closely, and your healthcare provider may need to adjust your glyburide and metformin dose -- especially when you are starting or stopping a beta blocker.

Bosentan
Combining glyburide and metformin with bosentan may cause increased liver enzymes. These medications should not be combined.

Calcium Channel Blockers
Taking glyburide and metformin with calcium channel blockers can make glyburide and metformin less effective, increasing your chance of high blood sugar (hyperglycemia). If you are taking glyburide and metformin with a calcium channel blocker, you may need to be monitored more closely, and your healthcare provider may need to adjust your glyburide and metformin dose -- especially when you are starting or stopping a calcium channel blocker.

Certain Decongestants
Taking glyburide and metformin with certain decongestants can make glyburide and metformin less effective, increasing your chance of high blood sugar (hyperglycemia). Decongestants are in many cough and cold products, so be sure to talk with your healthcare provider before taking any of these products.

Cimetidine (Tagamet)
Taking glyburide and metformin with cimetidine can increase the level of glyburide and metformin in your blood, increasing your risk of side effects. If you are taking glyburide and metformin with cimetidine, your healthcare provider may need to adjust your doses of these medications or may suggest an alternative to cimetidine.
