Drug Interactions With Glipizide and Metformin

Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors
Combining glipizide and metformin with monoamine oxidase inhibitors can increase your risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). You may need to be monitored more closely, and your healthcare provider may need to adjust your glipizide and metformin dose, especially when starting or stopping an MAOI.

Niacin
If glipizide and metformin is combined with niacin, this can make glipizide and metformin less effective, potentially increasing your chance of high blood sugar (hyperglycemia). You may need to be monitored more closely, and your healthcare provider may need to adjust your glipizide and metformin dose, especially when starting or stopping niacin, to prevent this interaction from occurring.

Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs
Taking glipizide and metformin with an NSAID can increase your risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). You may need to be monitored more closely, and your healthcare provider may need to adjust your glipizide and metformin dose, especially when stopping or starting an NSAID.

Oral Contraceptives
If glipizide and metformin is combined with oral contraceptives (birth control pills), this can make glipizide and metformin less effective, which may increase your chance of high blood sugar (hyperglycemia). You may need to be monitored more closely, and your healthcare provider may need to adjust your glipizide and metformin dose, especially when starting or stopping an oral contraceptive.

Phenothiazines
Taking glipizide and metformin with phenothiazines can make glipizide and metformin less effective, increasing your chance of high blood sugar (hyperglycemia). To prevent this, you may need to be monitored more closely, and your healthcare provider may need to adjust your glipizide and metformin dose, especially when starting or stopping a phenothiazine.
