Glimepiride Side Effects to Report
There are a number of side effects with
glimepiride that you should report to your healthcare provider. These include, but are not limited to:
- Symptoms of high blood sugar, including
o Increased hunger
o Increased thirst
o Increased urination
o Blurred vision
o Fatigue
o Shortness of breath
o Nausea or vomiting
- Symptoms of low blood sugar, including
o Sweating
o Shakiness
o Extreme hunger
o Dizziness
o Cold sweats
o Blurry vision
o Changes in behavior, such as irritability
o Loss of coordination
o Difficulty speaking
o Confusion
- Symptoms of liver problems (yellow eyes or skin, dark urine, or right upper abdominal pain)
- Signs of an allergic reaction, including an unexplained skin rash, itching, hives, unexplained swelling, wheezing, or difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Fever, chills, or sore throat
- Chest pain
- Shortness of breath
- Fast heartbeat or heart palpitations.
Rare Glimepiride Side Effects
There are other possible glimepiride side effects that can occur. These side effects happen in 1 percent or less of patients taking glimepiride. For these side effects, it is difficult to tell whether the side effect is caused by glimepiride or something else.
Some of these rare glimepiride side effects include, but are not limited to:
- Vomiting
- Abdominal pain (or stomach pain)
- Diarrhea
- Hepatitis
- Anemia
- Low sodium in the blood (hyponatremia)
- Blurred vision
- Reaction with alcohol, causing stomach upset, vomiting, shakiness, sweating, and stomach cramps.
Oral
diabetes medicines, including glimepiride, may increase the risk of death due to heart or blood vessel problems compared to
diabetes treatments using diet or insulin. This warning is based on one research study that looked at a medication similar to glimepiride. It is unclear at this time how important this risk may be in people taking glimepiride.
