Insulin Glargine Drug Information
Insulin glargine (Lantus®) is a prescription medication used to reduce blood sugar levels in people who have diabetes. Specifically, it is licensed to treat:
- Type 1 diabetes in adults and children
- Type 2 diabetes (also known as noninsulin-dependent diabetes or adult-onset diabetes) in adults.
This medication comes in injectable form. As a long-acting diabetes medicine, insulin glargine works as a "basal" insulin, which means that it provides a steady background level of insulin to help control blood sugar throughout the day.
Prior to beginning treatment with insulin glargine, review the drug's safety information with your healthcare provider. This product can react with other medications, so your healthcare provider needs a complete list of all other medicines you are taking. He or she also needs to know about any other medical conditions you have, such as liver or kidney disease.
