Cytomel is approved to treat thyroid problems in children and infants. Talk with your healthcare provider about the benefits and risks of using the drug in children.
On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend Cytomel for something other than the conditions discussed in this article. Sometimes, the drug is used in an off-label fashion in conjunction with antidepressants to treat depression (particularly depression that has been resistant to other treatments).
It is important to note that Cytomel should not be used as a weight loss medication in people without thyroid problems. Normal doses are unlikely to cause significant weight loss; weight loss is only seen at doses high enough to cause serious Cytomel side effects. Also, Cytomel should not be used to treat infertility, unless it is related to a thyroid problem.
