Diagnosing Adrenal Insufficiency

Diagnosing adrenal insufficiency in its early stages can be extremely difficult. An adrenal insufficiency diagnosis can be reached by asking questions about the patient's medical history, performing a physical exam, and conducting certain lab tests. Lab tests used in diagnosing adrenal insufficiency are used to determine if cortisol levels are sufficient. In some cases, imaging tests may be useful in reaching an adrenal insufficiency diagnosis.

Diagnosing Adrenal Insufficiency: An Introduction

In its early stages, it can be difficult to make an adrenal insufficiency diagnosis. In order to help in diagnosing adrenal insufficiency, the doctor will ask a number of questions about personal and family history of medical conditions, the symptoms a person is experiencing, and medications they are taking. The doctor will also perform a physical exam and recommend certain tests.
 

Tests for Diagnosing Adrenal Insufficiency

A diagnosis of adrenal insufficiency is made by using laboratory tests. The aim of these tests is first to determine whether levels of cortisol are insufficient, and then to establish the cause. X-ray exams or a CT scan of the adrenal and pituitary glands are also useful in helping to establish the cause of adrenal insufficiency (see Causes of Adrenal Insufficiency).
