Living With Addison's Disease (Cont.)

Learn How to Handle Stressful Events
During stressful events, such as surgery, the adrenal glands normally increase cortisol production. For people with Addison's disease, this increase does not occur. Therefore, during stressful events hormone medications may need to be increased.

A person living with Addison's disease should know how to increase medication during periods of stress or mild upper respiratory infections. Immediate medical attention is needed when severe infections, vomiting, or diarrhea occur. These conditions can precipitate an addisonian crisis. A patient who is vomiting may require injections of hydrocortisone.
